Dual Language Magnet Program


“Students in dual language programs are presented with social and cognitive benefits of bilingualism. They gain a second language, a broader vocabulary, and multiple views of the world,” (Cazabon, Lambert, & Heise-Baigorria, 2002).

November 07, 2008 — Mission statement of El Paso High School is to be the district leader in producing exemplary graduates through creative educational experiences and model community involvement.

El Paso High School is a block schedule of 8 periods with 4 periods alternating every other day.

Recommended Program of study:

9th grade Spanish 3, Dual Language Pre AP Geometry, Dual Language Pre AP Biology, Pre AP English 1, Pre AP World Geography, and Electives.

10th grade Foreign Language, Dual Language Algebra 2, Dual Language Pre AP Chemistry, Pre AP English 2, AP World History, and Electives.

11th grade Foreign Language, Dual Language Pre AP Calculus, Dual Language Pre AP Physics, AP English 3, AP U.S. History, and Electives.

12th grade Foreign Language, Dual Language AP Calculus, AP or Pre AP Science, AP or Dual Credit English 4, AP or Dual Credit Government, AP or Dual Credit Economics, and Electives.
The following goals are embedded within our dual language program:
• Develop high levels of academic proficiency in Spanish and English
• Develop students who will be more competitive in the global economy
• Give students an upper edge in college and the work place
• Develop positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors
• Develop the ability to see a problem from differing view points
• To gain an appreciation and understanding of different cultures

Dual Language Course Set-up:
• Instruction for Math and Science is 50% English and 50% Spanish.
• Language of instruction alternates
• Lessons build daily-no simple repeat of the day before
• Technology support and integration

Benefits of Dual Language:
• Students build capacity to deal with challenging academic subject matter in both languages
• Becoming bi-literate gives students a lifelong ability to communicate with more people.
• Students do better in school and have improved problem solving skills.
• Provides a competitive advantage in the workforce by opening up additional job opportunities.
• Research has found that students who averaged 4 or more years of foreign language study scored higher on the verbal section of the SAT.
